Reprint from Clarice Clarkson photo See #773 Note - Interview with Edward Wiren February 21, 2024 During a visit to the SCMA, manager Matthew Lovegrove asked Edward if he knew the location of the conscientious objectors camp on Mount Elphinstone during WWI. Edward commented that he visited the camp many years afterwards, and that it was piles of timber all covered in moss, but definitely the location of the camp. He stated the following: - The camp was located up past the end of Henry Road. ie. follow Henry Road straight up the mountain. - The camp was in the "green timbers" - a area of forest above where the forest fire of 1906 burned. - The camp location was roughly 2500 feet elevation. - The location directly up past the end of Henry Road looked down (had a clear sightline) to the Hintsa property, where people would put up coloured clothing on the line to signal whether it was safe in town for the people in the camp to come down. |
